What is a good success program for kids?

Anything that will motivate your child toward success is a plus. This could be a hobby, activity, social group, or sport. The object is to spark ambition from within, and let your child develop compassion for this activity.

Although you might initially choose a particular program, be flexible in your thinking. Let your son or daughter be a part of this selection process. For example: You cannot make him or her love baseball. There has to be some inherent passion for the particular program within his or her mind.

Hobbies would include: Music, arts, crafts, and collecting. These are primarily mental activities, and it is fairly common for kids to be a member of another activity at the same time. Children should try a variety of activities in order to “round out” their experience.

Activities are a fairly general term, and encompass any after school activity you can think of. Make sure these are supervised, and your child is actually learning something constructive.

Social Groups include: Religious instruction, scouting, SADD, and anything similar. These are great for bonding and should be well supervised. They teach kids, and teens, about community service and making a difference.

Sports can be separated into two main groups; organized league sports and individual sports would be the two main divisions. Children should be exposed to at least one of these to find their niche. It is important to note that the coach should be safety-minded and the kids should be having a good time.

It is not about what sport you would choose for him or her, but the fact that he or she is having fun while learning. Parents can be supportive, and take a “back seat,” at the same time. If you decide to become a coach, that’s fine,;every league needs parental support. Please beware of making the activity your child has selected into a stressful situation.

Many parents have the best of intentions, but end up over handling their son’s or daughter’s activities. Perfection is not realistically expected of adults, so why do we demand it from our children? The answer is simple: We want our children to be everything we were not. This is still with the best of intentions, but like it or not, our children will make mistakes and have to learn from them.

This dating profile was tested on an online dating agency, and achieved a 40% response rate from the girls viewing the profile. A photograph was not included in the profile. A 40% rate of response from your profile really is incredible when you’re dealing with online dating agencies, and especially where a photograph has not been submitted! In my opinion, you need knowledge to create a profile that works and gives you responses, which can come from experience, as in my case, or from getting tips from articles such as this. It’s worth the time and the effort to create a good profile, because otherwise you are wasting your time, and possibly your money, on online dating sites!

The dating profile is as follows:

The tag line: “Isn’t it time you found a man of mystery?”

The description: “With interests in martial arts, dancing, clarinet playing and flying, you could do worse than to get to know this software engineer! Cool, suave and sophisticated are the watch words. Dubbed as the next Johnny English, er… James Bond by his friends, you’re sure not to go far wrong by clicking through lots of ads to send him a message! Be quick, because he’s sure to be snapped up soon by the millions of women here!”

Let’s analyse the profile in detail:

1. The tag line is the first thing people see on this particular dating site. You want to get them to click through and view your profile. There are probably more successful tag lines than this one, but you do want yours to tie in well with your profile if possible. It’s a little like search engines. If you are searching for information, and click through to a page that didn’t contain useful information for you, what did you do? You headed straight for the back button on your browser! This is what you don’t want your profile readers to do, if you can help it.

2. Note that I have not used the word “I” in the dating profile. Instead, I talk about myself in the third person, and I’ve used the word “you” a great deal more than will be seen in your average profile. Who is the one person you’re most interested in? It’s you. If you can factor the word “you” into your profile, it will help. The reader is asking the question, “What’s in it for me?” This also makes the profile more unusual.

3. The dating profile is short, snappy, and to-the-point. Nobody’s going to read an essay, however interesting you think you are! However, if you can make your profile compelling reading, it’s OK to make it longer. There are differences of opinion here, but my personal belief is that you should not reveal too much about yourself in your profile. If your profile contains all there is to know about you, what would be the point in somebody sending you a message to learn more?

4. I have listed some interests that girls would especially find interesting. With regards martial arts, the attraction is obvious. Girls like to know their man can take care of himself! Secondly, dancing. Plenty of girls really enjoy to dance, but it’s a skill that many men won’t pluck up the courage to try, or even admit to. I actually play a wide variety of musical instruments, including the keyboard, saxophone and drums, but I think the clarinet has the most romantic and warmest sound of all these instruments. Lots of people in my position may have chosen to write about the saxophone at this point. Finally, what girl could resist a date with a pilot? I haven’t actually stated that I am a pilot, although in actual fact, I am a trainee pilot, but I could equally well be someone who enjoys travelling a lot, which would also be very attractive.

5. Many girls are not interested in geeky software engineers, but I’ve written about my hobbies that show I’m a well-rounded person who has other interests besides programming. Also, software engineers do pull in a respectable amount of money. Girls are partly looking for someone who is financially secure, and this goes some way to showing that this is the case. Finally, by writing about something that may not appeal to girls that much, I’ve given some credence to the dating profile, and have essentially suggested that I’m telling the truth in it.

6. I have added some humour to the dating profile. In case you don’t know, Johnny English is a James Bond spoof film, where the main character, played by Rowan Atkinson, is a complete idiot! The part about clicking through lots of ads is specific to a UK dating agency where you can choose not to pay for the service if, instead, you view advertising emails that they send you, and visit the advertised websites. You earn credits by doing this, and once you have enough credits, you can send someone a message. Probably the most requested trait in personal ads is a good sense of humour.

7. I am lucky to be a skilled writer. There are no spelling mistakes or problems with grammar that I am aware of in the above dating profile. If you are not very good at writing, you can quite easily check for these by writing your profile in Word for Windows, and checking spelling and grammar. Even better would be to have someone who is good at writing look over your profile for you!

You have to think like an advertiser, but you also have to try to paint an honest picture of yourself, and your profile should be a mixture of these two elements. Think what makes you attractive; perhaps ask your friends; and then write about it! Put in some of the elements that I’ve used, such as humour, and you’re sure to get results!

Who am I to determine that Serendipity is absolutely best blog software on the planet? Well, I’ll admit I’ve only been using blog software for 6 months. I’ve only tried Serendipity, Word Press and Nucleus. However, I have created over 20 full web sites using software from all areas. I’ve used Mambo, Joomla, Nucleus, Word Press, Serendipity, Java Servlets and JSPs’, plain HTML pages and Serendipity is my favorite.

I have worked as a professional programmer for 15 years and with Java (as a software engineer) for the last 10 years. I’ve spent most of that time dealing intimately with various web technologies. Certainly I am no blog expert, but I have a bit of experience with software. Serendipity is good software.

Serendipity is a blog engine. A blog is simply a series of postings to a web site, sometimes organized and sometimes random. They are meant to quickly collect ones thoughts, but more recently entire web sites are being created out of sophisticated blog engines. I believe the blog engine and full fledged CMS solutions are converging. If what you need is a simple menuing system and a way to get content up on the net, then perhaps a blog engine, specifically Serendipity, is what you want.

Installation of Serendipity was a breeze, both on GoDaddy and HostGator. The default install went well, with the exception of course that GoDaddy does not put your MySQL database on “localhost”, but on another server. Once you know the name of that server it’s all good.

Once installed, changing styles is also easy. Serendipity comes with a number of built in themes/templates which are a snap to install. Basically you just go to Manage Styles in the administration menu and choose your new theme. It couldn’t be easier.

Modifying templates is also quite simple. Most users simply want to change colors or graphics and this can all be done withing the style.css file for your template. I chose to make a copy of the “competition” template and modify my copy. All I had to change was the info.txt file and style.css, add my images to the img directory and I was good to go. Of course, it is not necessary to do this, just if you want a more unique look to your site.

Adding content is where Serendipity shines. I found the interface easy and intuitive, especially for media management. Imagine that you are adding an item and you want to add an image. Just click on media, put in the URL of the item you want to add and serendipity goes out and pulls it down and puts it in it’s own directory. Then you can choose how you want it to appear in the text (left, right, on it’s own) and whether or not you want the full image or thumbnail. Excellent!

Defining and using categories is equally easy and you can nest categories if you’d like. Each category can have a description and image. The description displays when the user put’s their cursor over the category, I am not sure when/if the image gets displayed.

Serendipity has options to use search engine friendly URLs, but for some reason I wasn’t able to get these working properly on GoDaddy. I’m sure there is an easy fix, I could ask at the Serendipity forum, but haven’t yet. Adding a trailing slash to the rewritten addresses seems to bring up the page, but my “.htaccess” knowledge is not good enough to fix it myself. The URL rewriting works just fine on HostGator. Remember, using the non friendly URLs doesn’t mean you won’t get indexed, just that it may take a little longer. Also, the SEO friendly URLs tend to boost your ranking a little because they have the subject matter right in the URL.

What about integrating Ads in Serendipity? Serendipity has a solution for that too. There is a plug in (comes with Serendipity) called HTML Nugget. It allows you to add arbitrary HTML to one of the sidebar columns, perfect for those tower Google Ads or links to affiliate programs. It takes me all of 5 minutes to set up the ads on one of my sites. Nucleus took me quite a bit longer, I had to manually edit some of their files. Not very friendly.

All in all, I like Serendipity, it is right up there with Joomla as my favorite piece of open source software. The development team has done a fantastic job and I look forward to more great releases from them.

Randy Couture is the current UFC Heavyweight Champion, courtesy of a sound beating that he gave Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia on March 3rd, 2007. The fight went the full 5 rounds, but Randy Couture dominated the action from the first punch, right up until the final take down. In fact, the first punch thrown put Tim Sylvia on the canvas, something that very few people thought that Randy Couture would be able to do. Conventional wisdom was that Tim Sylvia was too big, strong, young and too good a striker for forty three year old Randy Couture to overcome; Randy Couture has made a career out of defying conventional wisdom.

The next question that every Mixed Martial Arts fan is asking is; “Can Randy Couture find a way to defeat Mirko Cro Cop?”. It’s a simple question, but there is no simple answer. To figure out this riddle, we must go through each fighter’s history, looking at various skills of their past opponents and how they performed against these opponents. Of course, once we’re done with the analysis, we need to apply “The Couture Factor”. The Couture Factor is simply stated as:

“Never, ever count Randy Couture out”

This should be written in stone and kept in the UFC vaults to be placed ring side for each and every Randy Couture fight.

First, let’s categorize our two warriors. First off, I th‌ink it’s pretty fair to call Mirko Cro Cop a striker. He is probably the best striker in MMA today. It’s also easy to Categorize Randy Couture, he is a wrestler, sure he knows submissions and is a decent striker, but when it comes right down to it, Randy likes to get you in the clinch, take you down and ground and pound his way to victory.

Mirko Cro Cop vs Wrestlers:

For the purpose of this piece, I’m going to call Fedor a wrestler, although he has advanced submission and striking skills, his game is largely similar to a wrestler. Here is a list of the well known wrestlers that Mirko Cro Cop has faced:

1) Fedor Emelianenko

2) Mark Coleman

3) Kevin Randleman

4) Josh Barnett

Against the above fighters, Mirko Cro Cop has two wins over Josh Barnett, a win over Mark Coleman, a loss to Fedor and splits a win and a loss with Kevin Randleman. That makes him 4-2 against wrestlers.

Randy Couture vs strikers:

Since I only picked four wrestlers for Cro Cop, I will narrow my striker list to four for Randy Couture:

1) Tim Sylvia

2) Chuck Liddell

3) Vitor Belfort

4) Pedro Rizzo

Randy’s record against this list of great strikers is one win over Sylvia, one win and two losses to Liddell, two wins and a loss to Belfort and two wins over Rizzo. That makes Randy Couture 6-3 vs strikers.

They’ve each won 66% of their fights against the other’s style, so, their records do not show an advantage to either fighter.

Like the fight between Sylvia and Couture, many fans are picking Mirko Cro Cop to easily defeat Randy Couture, they think that Cro Cop, like Chuck Liddell will be able to avoid Randy’s take downs and pick him apart with superior striking skills. These fans may indeed be correct, if you watch many of Mirko Cro Cop’s fights, they end similarly to Randy’s losses to Chuck Liddells, a hard punch grounding the opponent and Cro Cop moving in to finish with hard shots while standing over his opponent. Mirko Cro Cop also has a weapon that Chuck rarely uses, high kicks to the head. Cro Cop’s left shin to the right side of an opponents face often signals the end of the night, just ask Wanderlei Silva, Igor Vovchanchyn or my personal favorite, Dos Caras Jr. who came into the Pride ring in a wrestlers mask and woke up wondering where he was.

If Randy is to pull this fight out he must find a way to take Cro Cop down. This will not be easy as Mirko has a sprawl very similar to Chuck Liddell’s and he will make Randy pay on the way in.

So, to answer my own question, can Randy Couture defeat Mirko Cro Cop, of course he can. This is MMA and on any given night one talented fighter has a chance against another. The better question is; will Randy Couture Defeat Mirko Cro Cop? To answer that, we will need to wait until fight night.
