Me and my friend want to start a martial art that will help us get fit quickly, which one?
Me and my friend want to start a martial art but we have no idea which one to choose. We want one that will get us in shape and fit, but will also be useful for self defence. Also I want to be able to excel at it quickly and have a lot of fun. I've looked around but cant find anything, any suggestions? Thanks.

"i want to excel at it quickly" is not a very lofty goal. the more you rush through it, the more you will forget, and the more mistakes you will make, which will have to be corrected later. just relax and let things progress naturally, that truly is the fastest way to get where you're going.
any martial art can get you into better shape. you have to see what styles are available in your area and then take some free classes, they all offer free trial's.
someone said tae bo. while this is not a martial art per-say…i can tell you, it works and will blast you into shape for real. and..you can do it in your own home, or at a friends house, just get some of Billy Blanks' videos. (there are some basic martial skills of course as well)
as for useful in self defense…and achieving quick results. well that's not so easy. the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line. so you need to find an art that focuses on self defense, not "art" not "sport" not "pretty" not "tournaments" not "self esteem" not "bullspit"…however like i said, you're most likely going to be limited by what you can find in your area. make the most out of what you can get.
and of course 'useful in self defense' is a very relative term…what alot of schools put off as self defense..i call nonsense.

If you want to 'excel quickly' try Krav Maga – it's one of the fastest arts to learn to become effective immediately.
Whatever you do, make sure you pick a good school too.
